My work aims to shift from the anthropocentric lens and is created for the eyes of my subject, bees. These pollinators perceive higher nanometers of the color spectrum and research indicates their predisposition towards UV wavelengths. This work aims to explore designing for bee vision and has been photographed in blacklight to reveal wayfinding cues which are imperceptible to humans in daylight.
Currently on exhibition through November 2023 as part of Creature Conserve’s and The Urban Soil Institute’s show, ReImagining Conservation, at Swale House on Govern'or’s Island in New York City, UV Hive is a project in which I explored how research in bee optics could be utilized to provide better way finding for pollinators. As a beekeeper myself, this hive was designed with honeybees in mind and uses a standard Langstroth beehive as the base structure.
